In addition to diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, our patients can get specialist advice on contraception, menstrual cycle disorders, menopause, hormonal problems, and fertility issues.

Who is a gynecologist?

A gynecologist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the female reproductive system. This system of organs is responsible for normal sexual function, menstruation, pregnancy, and childbirth.

Gynecologists are involved in women’s reproductive health from puberty to menopause. A gynecologist can also treat certain conditions of the pelvic muscles affecting the rectum, bladder, and urethra, depending on the type of complaint.

When should you visit a gynecologist?

A gynecologist specializes in all aspects of female reproductive health, including preventive care and screenings for cancer or sexually transmitted diseases. A visit to the gynecologist should be a part of your routine health care, starting at the earliest age, i.e., 13 – 15 years. The MD Clinic emphasizes the importance of regular annual checkups with your chosen gynecologist.

In addition to regular gynecological check-ups, which a woman should have at least once a year, you should also visit a gynecologist for the following reasons:

• In case of menstrual problems– irregular or abnormally long/short periods, severe cramps during the monthly period, heavy bleeding
• Sexually transmitted infections
• Painful sexual intercourse
• Benign and malignant growths on/in the reproductive organs
• Menopause
• Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
• Endometriosis
• Congenital abnormalities of the reproductive organs
• Problems with the breasts and/orwith breastfeeding
• Urinary incontinence

What does the gynecological examination look like, and which conditions does it address?

The doctor begins the examination with a conversationand inquires about your symptoms depending on your age, medical history, and specific concerns.

The gynecologist will begin by reviewing your medical history, including any previous surgeries, pregnancies, menstrual cycle patterns, use of contraceptives, sexual activity, and family history of gynecological conditions. After that, the gynecologist physically examinesyou, which includes checking your overall health and body mass index (BMI) and assessing any visible abnormalities.

By performing an external examination, the gynecologist visually inspects the external genitalia for any abnormalities, infections, or signs of inflammation. An internal examination, performed with the help of a speculum, will reveal the condition of the vagina and cervix as well as any abnormalities. Finally, the gynecologist will take a Pap smear and, if necessary, also samples for other tests.

Pap smear: A gynecologist can collect cells from the cervix to look for signs of precancerous conditions or cervical cancer.
STD tests and swabs: Depending on your age, sexual history, and risk factors, your gynecologist may recommend screening tests for sexually transmitted infections, such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV.

It’s important to communicate openly with your gynecologist during the consultation, as this will enable the doctor to address your health needsand help you feel comfortable and well-informed throughout the consultation.
